Assessing Kennel Dog Welfare

چکیده
Introduction For many dogs, time in a kennel often means a brief stay in a veterinary hospital or boarding facility. In breeding kennels and animal shelters, as well as sites where dogs are used for research, time is measured in weeks, even years. Upon entering a kennel environment, dogs may be confronted with stressful situations, such as new environmental events, sounds, or smells, separation from familiar kennel mates or caretakers, as well as confinement in a run or cage. As a result, some dogs may experience fear, boredom, frustration or social isolation, which may result in poor welfare. On the other hand, it is important to know when dogs are doing well so that positive states can be maintained and promoted. Knowledgeable caretakers can impact the health and well-being of dogs by identifying and attending to signs of poor as well as positive welfare states. Regardless of the causes of a dog’s state of being, it is important for those who work with dogs to be aware of key indicators of both positive and negative well-being.

The breeding of pedigree dogs: time for strong leadership.
A recent article in Genetics looked at population structure, genetic diversity and inbreeding in purebred dogs, not least as dogs are being used increasingly as models of human diseases (Calboli et al., 2008). The authors accessed the UK Kennel Club’s extensive registration database and analysed the pedigrees of 10 breeds with relatively large numbers of dogs registered over about eight generat...

متن کاملNoise in the animal shelter environment: building design and the effects of daily noise exposure.
Sound levels in animal shelters regularly exceed 100 dB. Noise is a physical stressor on animals that can lead to behavioral, physiological, and anatomical responses. There are currently no policies regulating noise levels in dog kennels. The objective of this study was to evaluate the noise levels dogs are exposed to in an animal shelter on a continuous basis and to determine the need, if any,...
متن کاملEffects of sheltering on physiology, immune function, behavior, and the welfare of dogs.
Approximately 4 million dogs live in animal shelters each year. However, understanding and measuring the welfare of these kenneled dogs presents a challenge. One way to determine welfare is by assessing how stay at the shelter influences physiology, immune function, and behavior of the dogs. Prior research, from all of these domains, has not resulted in clear conclusions on how the animal shelt...
متن کاملVariation in activity levels amongst dogs of different breeds: results of a large online survey of dog owners from the UK
Regular physical activity is an important means of promoting health, both in people and their pets. Walking is the most common method used for dogs, but there is a lack of clarity on how much daily activity different breeds of dog require. Data from an online survey of UK dog owners were collected between June and August in 2014. The University of Liverpool Ethics Committee approved the project...
